Leica introduces its new X2, the second digital compact camera series X "made in Germany", following the aesthetic of the first model and the concept of using a sensor APS-C, but with interesting news, not only in itself, but what they represent ... in our opinion. The new sensor is a CMOS APS-C of 16.2 effective megapixels (ISO 100 to 12,500), compared with 12.3 X1 model, and among the improvements are not directly visible, announces improved autofocus system quickly and silent operation. The system is 11 points, spot options, face detection and manual focus, which is up to 30 cm. As understood, a captor of generous dimensions and resolution still contained, expect a very good signal to noise ratio.

In our opinion, this newly developed Leica, could mean that the project announced by Dr. Kaufmann in the sense of developing a CSC, more futuristic and it would not be excluded that in the environment Photokina could talk and a Leica sort of "X3" with interchangeable lens, keeping the body and the current sensor.

PROS:

- If you distance yourself enough, the flash can produce good vibrant colors in auto mode (here auto mode is called Smart mode).
- W/o flash, the colors via auto mode are pretty vibrant and accurate. Not too orange or blue, etc.
- There's is a dedicated button on top jsut to turn on the lcd in front.
- Very colorful menu whose options look like iphone app icons. it's not touchscreen as far as i know. other cameras are jsut simple white text menus.

CONS:
- Switching from Photo-Video-Children mode is not in one menu. You have to go through tiny menu tabs that are only text. Not as intuitive, but one can get used to it. I was expecting a simpler menu or a switch that goes from photo to video at least. you need to go to the menu to go from photo to video to other modes. Seems like it's market was aimed towards teens and mothers of children.

There are many other features we don't need like wi-fi, emailing directly from the camera, tranfering photos from camera to smartphone wirelessly, panoramic merge, color magic, fun distortions, but for our use, it's perfect and great price. This kit comes in ONE box, not separate boxes like one for the camera, one for the SD card, one for the pouch. The kit is shrinkwrapped in one Samsung box. So that you can wrap as a single gift. Other than the semi-intuitive menu, this is packed with more features than we need.

That camera had many attributes such as an optical viewfinder and AA batteries, but was only 6X optical zoom. I had tried other cameras over the last 1-2 years but the quality of the pictures was not good. This camera seems to be a winner. The pictures are nice and clear, the new cmos sensor works great in low light, it's very small so fits well in your shirt pocket, and it has 12X optical zoom. I'm not real enthused about the image browser software as the older canon zoom browser seemed easier to use but it's new for me. I had to by a micro SD card, there is no optical viewfinder, and it uses a rechargeable lithium battery, which seems to hold its charge well. It would be nice to have a printed manual rather than a CD for more in depth discussion of the camera but this is an industry trend. The movies are also quite good. I bought the camera at BJs where it was a little cheaper but had to buy the micro SD card which can be gotten cheaper online. All in all this camera seems like a winner and will update if my intial impression changes.

There is no significant changes, the main ones are that the shooter speed is increased to 4 sec (from 2 sec) for night shooting and the new one has video recording in 60i in 1080 AVCHD. Also the panorama option has been boosted since the DSC-TX10's entry, offering solid panoramas of up to 360 degrees. Sony also increased focusing speed. I think these are basically all the differences. Waterproofing and the design hasn't change at all. I red a lot of comments about the waterproofing on the TX10 - both good and bed. I am scuba diver and I've been doing underwater photography for several years now. This camera is not designed for that, it's rated only for 5 meters (16 foot) which I tested in our community pool and it works just fine. Of course you will need to read the instructions and make sure that the seals are properly closed. The camera is great for any pool and for a lot of fun with the kids. Bottom line - it's awesome camera. For it's class I think it's the best on the market for now. If you are looking for very good pictures from a small camera - that's the one.

For starters, this is not a point and shoot. The automatic modes are nice, but they won't do anything you can already do with much cheaper point and shoot cameras. That said, if you are willing to do the work and learn the camera, you will be rewarded. I am really happy with the pictures I am getting, but it took me weeks to get used to it.

Ergonomics:

The camera is basically a slab, it doesn't have contoured edges or soft grips. I find it really comfortable, it fits in my hands just fine but some will get nervous at using this camera without a wrist strap. I only used the strap that shipped with the camera for a few days until I received my Gordy strap, which works extremely well. I like that it is pretty much impossible for the camera to power up just from sliding within a case, unlike the Sony DSC-HX9V which did this all of the time. There's a downside to this, it is very hard to find the power button by touch (the camera will wake up if you have a lens with a lock button and you engage it). The shutter button is exactly where I expect it, unlike again the Sony.

Camera body/controls/etc:

This camera is beautiful, it draws a lot of attention, which may be the opposite of what you want. I imagine the silver and black bodies from a few feet away will look like any other camera, but the white version just stands out too much. The fit and finish are really nice, I am not a fan of the pop up flash but it works. The flash cannot pop up unless you unlock it manually. The bottom door for the battery and memory card access has a decent latch and has yet to open accidentally. The cover for the micro HDMI and USB is hard plastic, no idea how log it will last if you actually use these cables a lot. I only used them once to test the HDMI cable.

The back controls are extremely simple, they took very little time getting used to. The main command wheel does NOT include PASM, those are accessed through the shooting menu. The main command wheel actually looks kind of naked, since it only has four modes. The second command wheel has a nice texture and the spinning element has a notch action, again a nice touch.

Lenses:

I bought the kit with the 10mm prime and the 10-30mm VR zoom. I spent a lot of time agonizing over this choice, but I am really happy that I got the prime instead of going for the kit with the two zooms. The only downside is that the prime doesn't have VR. As part of a Christmas promotion Amazon gave me a free memory card and a remote, the remote came in really handy while I was learning to get used to the 10mm prime, since this was the first time in years that I was shooting a camera without built-in optical stabilization and/or vibration reduction. After a few weeks I got the hang of it and shake is no longer an issue, it was just a matter of unlearning bad habits I picked up from spending so much time with point and shoot cameras.

The 10-30 is a sweet little lens. It is very small, and it has a lock mode that allows it to collapse for storage. This means that the camera is not really that much bulkier when carried with the 10-30mm than with the 10mm prime. My personal preference is to keep the 10mm on as default, unless I know I will be shooting video or that available light is not going to be an issue. I am dying to get my hands on the 10-100 VR lens, which right now costs as much as what I paid for the camera, the 10mm and the 10-30VR.

Pictures/Video:

The pictures are disappointing if you are expecting the camera to do all the work. It pays to dig into the manual and venture into the PASM mode, it was a lot less painful than what I expected. You can do some really impressive work with PASM modes with really little work. I wish I could do more than +/- 2EV adjustments, and it won't let me auto bracket, but except for those two things it has been a joy to shoot. Also, with the sound effects muted it is completely silent, which is awesome for candid shots. As for the autofocus, it is as fast as advertised. My only issue with the autofocus was while shooting video, and I am not done experimenting with the different custom settings for that.

Two of the auto modes are more for show. There is a mode that will shoot a very short video and then freeze at the end, and it adds some background music. There is also a mode that shoots a high speed burst, then tries to pick the 5 best pictures of the batch. This mode is slow and cumbersome, to me it is mostly as a way to demo the capabilities of the camera. The plain vanilla auto mode is decent, but creative types will soon end up leaving it set in one of the PASM modes instead.

This camera cannot shoot 1080p video at 60p, it either does 30p or 60i. At 720p it will do 60p. You can also shoot fast speed videos at either 400 or 1200fps, which are encoded to be played at normal speed and yields some interesting slow motion effects. I have not had issues posting these videos to Youtube but I noticed that the Xbox 360 channel for Youtube won't display the high speed burst videos.

Overall:

This is not a camera for a newbie, or somebody that spends most of the time in full auto mode. Think of this as a camera for somebody that would rather have a DSLR and a dozen lenses but doesn't want to lug all that gear around. I actually freaked out when I realized that I could have had a Nikon D3100 and the 18-55 kit lens for $150 less, but in reality this is the form factor that I needed, I don't like hauling around a big camera. Also, keep in mind your color choice if you would rather blend into the background when taking pictures because the white camera attracts a lot of attention (I imagine this is going to be 10 times worse if it is the pink one). I doubt anyone will blink twice at the silver or black versions.

The camera itself has a tremendous amount of features, and takes very sharp pictures, even at extreme high zoom. The automatic setting is very clever, and makes smart decisions about lighting and flash--smarter than my 2-year-old Canon. Note: it's strange that a "force-flash" option is not allowed under full automatic mode, but hardly a deal-breaker as you can switch to partial-auto mode. The image stabilization is quite good.

The main con is the pop-up flash, which is annoying because my fingers tend to want to grip the camera there. Even 5 millimeters to the right and would have been no problem, but I suppose it was a compactness issue. The flash is quite powerful for a consumer camera. Another silly issue is the included manual, which is horribly inadequate. Fortunately you can find a real manual online. The manual is needed because the camera has a lot of hidden complexity, especially if you want to use the top features. Still, all and all, I'm quite happy with the value for the money, and to get 16x zoom in such a compact form.

The D4 is an upgrade from my D3. I skipped the D3s, which I understand is a strong performer as well. The D4 excels in a couple of very critical areas for me. The first is low level shooting. With the D4 I will no longer have to light grungy, dank, dark college gyms for basketball and swimming. The camera shoots very usable JPEGs at 10,000 ISO. This is remarkable. Very little noise, and if you are not shooting to make huge prints, the noise is hardly noticeable. I am sure the NEF files at that size are workable as well. I tend to stay away from the highest ISO ratings, only because I haven't needed them. I cannot wait for fall night football games as the combination of high ISO and a 2.8 lens will be perfect. The auto focus on this camera is amazing. The D3 was good. The D4 is great. The combination of this with a 200-400 AFS Zoom is just heaven. I've gotten more, better and great shots since I got this camera than in the whole season before it. My clients have noticed it and commented. Very impressive. The white balance is much better than the older models. It gives you a true color and needs little tweaking. But if you need to tweak it can do that too.

A lot of people will complain about the XQD card. I wont. It is fast. When you stick that card in, with the camera set at JPEG Fine, you have about 71 images in your "burst." Why you would ever use 71 images at once is beyond me, but they are there. For example, I shot a lacrosse championship game the other day. It went into two overtimes. I was able to shoot the action going into the final shot--and then shoot a stream of jubilation shots without missing a beat. That would have consumed all of the memory of the D3. Yes, the cards are expensive, but if you shoot raw, you are going to need the space. The battery is new, having to meet new Japanese standards. But, I've gotten nearly 4,000 shots out of it before seeing the low battery light come on.

I am not used to the Video yet, so I cannot comment on it too much. I need to work out the bugs and give that a shot before the fall sports season starts. As my clients evolve in their media savvy, I am sure that an ability to shoot short video clips of their games will come in very handy. I need every competitive edge I can get these days. All in all, this camera is everything a pro would want: High quality, innovative, fast, big, weather sealed, and backwards compatible with my equipment. The D3s will give it a run for low level light shooting, but if you are moving up from a D2 or D3, the bells and whistles make this worth every dime.

PROS:
+ Resolution: Beautiful detail, just make sure that your lenses are up to the task.
+ Dynamic Range: Incredible, when shooting in lower ISO's it is near impossible to ruin a photo. Do an internet search for: "fred miranda d800 review Yosemite" to see real life comparisons.
+ Color: Adobe profiles are horrible, create custom profiles using a MacBeth chart with Adobe DNG profiler and the colors will amaze.
+ AutoWB: Excellent, much better than the D3/D700.
+ Low ISO: Having a true 100 ISO is godsend for on-location studio lighting setups.
+ High ISO: The D800 and LR4 do an excellent job in controlling noise. Using PS plugins a properly exposed image can print acceptable 6x9's at 12800 ISO (max for D3/D700's is 6400).
+ LiveView: The live exposure preview is a new and pleasant feature.
+ Build and Weatherproofing: I shot three weddings with this camera and all three had slight to heavy rain. The camera performed excellent in all occasions, as did my D3.
+ Handling: The auto ISO is easy to engage and the new position of the ISO button is more intuitive when looking through the viewfinder than on the D700. Like the D700, the D800 is extremely customizable.
+ Autofocus modes: S(ingle) AF point is very good for stationary subjects at close and far distances; 9 point AF: works well with close range subjects that move, but in long distance shots it may select a contrasty pattern on the shoulder and throw the eyes a bit out of focus; 3-D: tries to follow the subject based on color and it works quite well; Auto: looks for what it thinks it the closest face. It comes in handy when taking action photos with the camera overhead.

CONS:
- Software: Nikon software can produce excellent results, but it is clunky and slow.
- Handling: The mode selector button is awkwardly placed. I prefer the D7000 U1/U2 style custom banks.
- JPEG: Nikon has the worst jpeg engine; competitors like Olympus, Panasonic, and Canon put Nikon to shame. Although I would never shoot JPG, there are those that do, and this camera will let them down.
- Autofocus: 1.) All 51 points are still too centrally located 2.) No increase in cross-type sensors over the D3/D700 3.) All the cross-type AF sensors are in the middle. 4.) Like the D3/700, the outer sensors are near useless in low lit, low contrast situations.
- LiveView: There is a well reported bug when using LiveView at 100% viewing, although I am still able to focus, I heard that is a deal-breaker for many landscape shooters. I have no idea how people survived 100 years of film or shoot $20k+ Hasselblad's.

OVERALL:
Using proper technique, the images this camera produces are superior to the D3/D700 in every measurable aspect. Would I jump systems for this camera? If I owned a large collection of top-tier gear, NO! Otherwise, I would consider it if I was not too invested into another system. Does it equal or better Medium Format? There are differences in perspective, DOF, FOV, and cannot be compared. Having shot Canon (FD, 630, A2, Elan II, 20D, 40D, 5D I &II, 1D's) Nikon (FM, F4, F100, D200, D300s, D7000, D700, D800, D3), Fuji (S3, S5), Mamiya (645, RB67), and Hasselblad (H4D-40), I know that they are excellent tools that are capable of creating amazing images. Pick the one that best fits your needs and enjoy the fine art of photography and avoid online forums.

After reading Tech Guy's review of the HX200, I agree with his assessment of the camera ... It is so much better than the HX100 both in zoom capabilities and overall speed of the camera. I was able to get a remarkably clear photo of the moon close up and without having to crop the image. This is saying something for a point and shoot... Even DSLRs would have difficulty getting such a shot without having at least a 600-800mm lens which is an expensive one for any camera. Overall, I am extremely happy with this camera...Bravo, Sony!

PROS:
+ I can't say enough things about the new autofocus system. Amazing. Genius. I rarely have eyes out of focus now. Even my 85mm/1.2L is performing much better. I love the colors and creaminess from that lense but focusing it was like playing a Russian Roulette game. I am enjoying this lense much more often now with the Mark III.
+ The low light ISO capabilities are extremely good and more impressive than the Mark II.
+ I love the lock on the mode dial. I, for one, use to have frequent unsolicited mode changes from Manual to Bulb. No more of that.
+ I love the feel of the rubbery-like finish. The camera feels better in my hand than the Mark II.
+ LOVE the new dual card slots.

CONS:
- My one major gripe is that the autofocus point doesn't highlight in red when I press the focus button (I use back button focus). It only highlights in red when I change the autofocus point. Otherwise, it is a dark grey/black box. I use manual autofocus point selection consistently so I usually do not remember where it was pointing last after a few minutes and it is annoying to have to pretend to change the focus point just to see where it is set. Canon really needs to address this in the next firmware update.

Oh, another thing is that when I shoot a picture, it blocks me from playback of any other photos. I have to actually press the play button if I want to go back and compare that photo to the prior one. The first two 5Ds did not hijack playback like this and it is kind of annoying. Oh, for all of you on waiting lists (as was I), I went to BestBuy and they had several in stock.

PROS:
+ Movie button is easier to start (compared to HX9V) and not lag
+ When reviewing pictures, very responsive and populates the pictures quickly
+ Wifi built in with WiFi sharing (camera to phone, camera to tv, camera to computer)
+ Tog wheel is easier to turn (compared to HX9V)
+ Display screen is beautiful and crisp.
+ Improved focus speed and 20x optical magnification
+ GPS (works great with Google Earth/maps)
+ Video, for a point and shoot camera, is awesome! Looks great on HDTV.
+ Stereo microphones seem improved over HX9V

CONS:
- misleading advertising concerning "Wireless battery charging is available with the included multi-station dock"
- added picture effects could be better. You can alter them on the computer for the same effect. Would like to see miniature mode for making movies.

Great camera! Lots of features! Amazing picture quality in image and movie mode. If you need a new camera, buy this camera. If you want to save a few bucks, get the Sony HX20V. Same camera without the Wifi.

In fact I had another camera saved on my wish list so long that when I compared this camera to the saved one, this one had better features on every point! I love the ease of just pointing and shooting and still getting wonderful pictures. I recently went to NYC and took a bunch of pictures and only had to delete one! Transferring pictures to my computer is also a breeze. I wholeheartedly recommend this camera to someone looking for an easy to use point and shoot camera that takes beautiful pictures!

The D3200 is full of features and appears to be built with exceptional attention to detail. I've only used it for about 3-4 hours, but so far, I have found no issues with either the photography features or the video features. With a 16 GB SD card, the viewfinder says I can record 20 minutes of 1080P video, which seems reasonable. I also was able to take high-res pictures while recording a video simultaneously. So far, this is a top notch camera, especially considering the price point! I highly recommend this camera for anyone looking to get a solid, not over-the-top, dSLR camera.
